Press Release: USCAR OSRP OFFERS ONLINE OUT-OF-POSITION TESTING AIDS FOR CRASH SIMULATION RESEARCHERS & SUPPLIERS

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Dec. 22, 2011 – The United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR) Occupant Safety Research Partnership (OSRP) recently posted on the USCAR website a series of experiments, test cases for code development and video files to help researchers and suppliers verify and validate out-of-position occupant protection results in crash simulations.

The “Out-of-Position (OOP) Simulation Benchmark Problems” were developed by the OSRP’s Safety Simulation Working Group (SSWG), which conducted extensive tests using frontal airbags, in 2005-2006, to establish benchmark problems that would aid researchers and suppliers worldwide in assuring valid results of occupant protection simulation tests.

The posted document uses text, graphs and illustrations, and imbedded videos to summarize two sets of experimental tests: “Driver Airbag Pendulum Tests” and “Passenger-Airbag OOP Tests with Hybrid-III 6-year-old Child Dummy.”

The test cases for software code development will help researchers and engineers evaluate, calibrate and validate their computer models while the physical testing guidelines will help to assure model development that correlates to the physical world.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this online resource to suppliers and researchers globally,” said Guy Nusholtz, OSRP management committee member and senior manager at Chrysler Group LLC, who was a lead member of the SSWG. “The U.S. automakers, through the OSRP and USCAR, welcome the opportunity to help lead the development of advanced vehicle safety technologies, regardless of manufacturer, because of the intrinsic benefits it brings to consumers,” he said.

The “Out-of-Position Simulation Benchmark Problems” resources may be accessed through the home and OSRP pages of the USCAR website at www.uscar.org and specifically, at http://bit.ly/USCAR-OSRPbenchmarks.
